Website for the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education Review Working Group.

Welcome!

Welcome! This site contains information, updates, and working documents related to the 2023-25 review of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

About

Working Group Charge:

This appointed working group will conduct a review of The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, in order to potentially inform future revisions of the document. Possible approaches include but are not limited to conducting an environmental scan by reviewing relevant literature and surveying academic librarians about their views, experiences, and approaches related to the Framework. The group will develop a report that details the process and methods used, the findings of this work, and potentially recommended revisions to the Framework. If the working group recommends revisions, a second working group will be charged with considering revisions and the approach to making those revisions.

For questions about the Working Group, please contact any of the members of the SLILC & IS Leadership Coordination Group:

Amanda Folk (SLILC Chair)

Andrea Baer (SLILC Vice-chair)

Nicole Pagowsky (IS Chair)

Kirsten Feist (IS Vice-chair)

Carrie Forbes (IS past Chair, representative to SLILC)

Call for Volunteers

This is a call for volunteers to serve on a working group to review The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This document is slated to be reviewed every 5 years* and although revision is not required from this process, the review is likely to lead to some adjustments. While the working group will have the ability to determine the process and methods for the review, possible approaches include conducting an environmental scan by reviewing relevant literature (i.e. published journal articles, columns, books, and/or blogs) and administering a survey of academic librarians about their views, experiences, and approaches related to the Framework. Please see the bulleted details below:

  • Working group composition: members of ACRL’s Instruction Section (IS) and the ACRL Student Learning and Information Literacy Committee (SLILC)

  • Appointment process: from indicating volunteer interest through the volunteer form, the SLILC and IS leadership coordination group (see membership below) will appoint volunteers based on a variety of criteria including range of expertise, interest, current committee commitments and workload, and diversity and inclusion for demographics and type of academic library.

  • Timeline and scope: this work is intended to be completed within one year, between July 1, 2024 - June 26, 2025 (during the time of the ALA Annual Conference). If revisions are recommended, the project timeline and scope will be expanded, and a second working group will be charged with additional evaluation and implementation; this second group would allow for some appointment renewals from the first group depending on the work and members’ interest. The working group(s) will periodically report on their progress with the SLILC/IS coordination group.

  • Outcomes: a report detailing the process and methods used; the findings of this work; and if revisions are recommended, a projection of the scope and type based on findings. If a second group must be charged, further outcomes will be determined at that time.

To volunteer for this working group, please complete the volunteer form by May 3. Volunteers will be notified of their appointment status by the end of May.

*As is reflected in ACRL’s Procedures for Updating Standards, Guidelines, and Frameworks, typically ACRL documents are reviewed every 5 years. However, given the dramatic shift in approaches to information literacy that the Framework presented, the ACRL Board decided to extend this review cycle in order to allow the profession to have more time to use and operationalize the document. Additionally, the pandemic has caused a delay.
