Science and Technology Section (STS): About Our Discussion Groups

This guide provides information you need to successfully run or participate in a STS discussion group. We have tips for discussion group co-chairs and members, along with specific guidelines for each discussion group.

Charge

To provide a forum for and facilitate a discussion of current issues of concern to science and technology librarians.

Membership

The Hot Topics Committee usually has eight to ten members. See the current committee roster. This helps to ensure some portion of the membership can attend conferences to help run the events. The committee composition is determined by section leadership.

Responsibilities

Plan a discussion at ALA Annual Conference by determining topic and format. Some previous conference discussion topics have been posted to the STS website or published in STS Signal.  The Hot Topics committee should gather proposed ideas from the membership to present a topic and lead a discussion, preferably followed by group discussion. Topics discussed should include current issues affecting science and technology librarians.
