Culturally Responsive and Inclusive Mentorship

What Is Culturally Responsive and Inclusive Mentoring?

Inclusive mentoring intentionally takes into account the diverse backgrounds of mentees to encourage their holistic growth and development. Such mentorship, when effective, is culturally responsive, with mentors developing an awareness of their mentees’ cultural assets, recognizing how mentees’ experiences might differ from their own, and accommodating relevant actions with this deepened understanding. (Addy et al., 2023, p. 11)

A culturally responsive framework of working with people accepts, honors, and utilizes members’ cultural orientations in supporting their work and needs...[t]herefore, to be culturally responsive, a mentoring program requires that the cultural orientations and experiences of members should be incorporated, in order to enrich each member. (Han & Onchwari, 2018, p. 8)

How Do Culturally Responsive and Inclusive Mentoring Impact Our Work?

Mentoring relationships are most successful when mentors have the ability to:

  • See the experiences of mentees as distinct, valuable, and important
  • Value what mentees bring to the mentoring relationship
  • Recognize their own culturally shaped beliefs, perceptions, and judgements
  • Understand the cultural differences and similarities between themselves and their mentees
