The STS IL chat is sponsored by the Science & Technology Section's (STS) Information Literacy (IL) committee. STS is a section of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).

STS IL chats are intended to be a place where science librarians can gather to discuss topics related to instruction and information literacy. They are open to all, free-of-charge.
Chats are held mid-month, approximately 5-10 times each year. They are announced on the STS-listserv approximately 1 to 2 weeks ahead of time.
Chats typically take place on Zoom platform and are recorded and archived. Links to the recordings have been sent out on the STS-listserv, but are also available on this guide.

STEM Information literacy thrives when librarians connect to discuss and spark new ideas! The ACRL Science and Technology Section - Information Literacy Committee invites you to share your exciting innovations and partnerships as a monthly chat discussion leader. Over the course of an hour, discussion leaders present content (30-40 min) and then discuss their topic with attendees. Chats are held via Zoom.

Please use this Chat Proposal form to express your interest, describe your topic (3-5 sentences), and view available dates. Topics should fall within the theme "Innovations and partnerships in STEM information literacy."

Chronic Wasting Disease: The battle between advertisements and science

A sophomore Zoology class was introduced to disease transmission throughout their course work. Presented with an advertisement on Chronic Wasting Disease, students analyzed it and then compared it to other scholarly sources. The issues of access, searching skills, and scientific literacy levels of different audiences were also discussed.

Scholarly Communication and Predatory Publishing in the Undergraduate Classroom
February 2020 Discussion Leader: Dianna Morganti
When we discuss the topics of Scholarly Communication with undergraduates, we usually do so in the context of a “Research Experience” or openly publishing an honor’s thesis in the IR. Our undergraduate students are stumbling upon the issues of ScholComm before they ever meet with us, though. When Dianna had a chance to review the “works cited” for papers submitted before the students met with her for a Computer Science one-shot, 5 out of the 35 students had used questionable or known-predatory publications as references. She’ll share her strategies to incorporate ScholComm education in that Undergraduate Information Literacy one-shot and their outcomes, and she’ll open up to a discussion on scholarly communication in the undergraduate classroom

Wikipedia into the Sciences

In this chat, Kelee will share ideas about teaching a variety of classes on the topic of how to engage with and edit Wikipedia in the sciences. This includes working with the Wiki.Edu community, and teaching a credit bearing course on Applied Science Communication at Cornell University. The discussion will include how Kelee has transferred her idea to a new position at a Princeton University and talk about some of the issues she encountered on introducing this concept at both universities.

Reframing Information Literacy for First-Year Engineering Students
March 2019 Discussion Leader: Becca Greenstein
All first-year Engineering students are required to take Design Thinking and Communication (DTC), where they work with a community partner to design a product that solves a real-world problem (i.e. an armrest storage device for a wheelchair). Over the past few years, librarians have worked with individual DTC classes to help students find appropriate resources for their literature reviews, which explore one subtopic of the overarching project. Recently, we've been reframing our approach to providing support for DTC: a new research guide, online modules embedded in Canvas, and an assessment of students' research practices. This session will describe our work to reach all DTC students and increase their information literacy skills.

As academic libraries face new challenges of staying relevant to the graduate research process, we must find ways to enter diverse academic communities, start engaging in scholarly conversations, and facilitate the expansion of their information literacy skills. This session serves three purposes: to examine strategies for librarians to reach out to STEM faculty and graduate students and spark conversations about the Framework, to share ideas for developing a collaborative instructional design that integrates the Framework into STEM graduate-level courses, and to discuss quantitative and qualitative methods for assessing this implementation.

Engineering Senior Design: The Last Chance Saloon

The American Society of Engineering Education estimates that beginning engineers will spend over half of the time on the job after graduation doing research. Despite this, many engineering librarians report that they rarely have an opportunity to speak with undergraduate students in a classroom setting. Design classes, particularly at the senior level, are often the last (and possibly only aside from first-year experiences) chance for librarians to engage engineering undergraduates. Students need both new knowledge and a refresher on important concepts in information literacy as it applies to engineering, but they often struggle with finding the best sources or knowing where or how to look given the constraints of their project, and are often reluctant to ask for assistance.

Reaching Math and Physics Students with Special Collections

I've worked with Special Collections in the past few years to host an event for the math and physics clubs. At each we do a showing of rare math/physics texts as well as historic material in our archives related to their discipline. I use this a a chance to introduce myself to them and give them a bit of information about what I do as well as showcase the depths of the library's special collections in their discipline.

The “Research as Inquiry” Frame is closely similar to another research process--the Scientific Method. Why not make use of this parallel to help teach students about information-based research? In this chat, we will compare the “Research as Inquiry” Frame to the steps of the Scientific Method, explore ideas about how to harness the students’ familiarity with the Scientific Method to conduct successful information-based research, and identify the advantages and imitations of this approach.

How can students new to the sciences develop an understanding of scientific information literacy? At Michigan State University, Information Literacy and Science Librarians partnered with the introductory science course lab coordinators to develop an online scientific information literacy module. Designed to be scalable, the module utilizes a flipped classroom approach and introduces students to ideas of authority, the scholarly publishing process, and critical thinking about the media portrayals of science.

A lesson plan used for biology and earth science classes that has students using clues in news articles shared on social media to original research. This is typically used with seniors, though juniors could probably do it as well (Can do primary/secondary sources with juniors and assign a review of source types as pre-work). It touches a bit on authority is constructed and contextual as we discuss the value of different types of sources, and gets students used to the close reading they would need to do to find information in the articles or posts to trace back to the primary source article of interest.

This presentation will detail a project in a course at Illinois designed to prepare undergraduates in the life sciences to pursue graduate research. This class session uses cognitive constructivism in the context of the ACRL framework to teach information literacy skills in one session of this course.
The lesson plan was a combined effort between the librarian and professor.

Using the PICO Method in Library Instruction Across STEM Disciplines

PICO is understood to support evidence based practice/medicine research, part of the medical and health sciences disciplines. However, very little use of the PICO framework is found outside of these disciplines. The idea to use PICO for research question and search strategy formulation in other disciplines has been explored in the recent past, but did not seem to generate wide use outside of traditional medical and health fields. With the release of ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the Research as Inquiry frame, the use of PICO for information literacy instruction may again be of interest.

The scholarly conversation in the sciences has developed over time, and using historical sources can highlight how conventions of the scholarly conversation have developed, where they began, and who they might exclude. Using historical sources can help students realize that these conventions were created, rather than being inevitable. Shifting Landscapes: Integrating Flipped Teaching into your Information Literacy Instruction

This chat session will begin with a short presentation about three separate applications of flipped teaching in the College of Engineering, University of Saskatchewan. The Engineering Librarian used this pedagogy to deliver information literacy instruction to Civil Engineering students in their 2nd and 4th year of study in design heavy courses. The chat that follows is expected to generate thoughtful discussion about how flipped teaching could be applied in your own practice. Possible considerations include class size, location of class (computer lab availability), ability to collaborate with a faculty member, time, what you will cover in the tutorial and what lecture content will be.

STEM in libraries- Translating STEM into informal education

STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) is a buzz word heard in many places and it has become the focus of many education platforms across the country. Like many libraries across the country, Frederick County Public Libraries in Maryland has decided to focus much of its educational efforts on STEM and is home to one of the first STEM Labs in the state. A dedicated space to STEM education for those aged preschool to 18, the STEM Lab is an ever evolving space that aims to educate kids on STEM concepts in an informal and fun way. In this discussion, STEM Lab creator and director Stephanie Long will give an overview of the Lab, how it began, where it is headed, and how the education of both librarians and patrons happens in the space.
