About this guide

undefined

This index to German-language newspaper access in North America is a project of the Collection Development Working Group
of the Center for Research Libraries' German-North American Resources Partnership (GNARP) in cooperation with the European Studies Section (ESS).

The scope includes German-language newspapers regardless of geographic location. The emphasis is on historical newspaper holdings; lists of current online editions can be found in the Internet Public Library and elsewhere. General news is the main focus; specialized, narrow, trade or niche newspapers are not well represented. As a complement you can also consult the International Coalition on Newspapers (ICON) and the News webpage on the ESS German Studies guide. For access to German-language newspapers published in the United States, see Library of Congress' Chronicling America: Historical American Newspapers.

Organization of the guide: Newspaper titles -- whether local, regional or national in scope -- are listed alphabetically by city of publication. City names are given as recognizable in common English usage (e.g., Vienna); vernacular equivalents are given where the spelling differs (e.g., Wien). Each holding institution is listed alphabetically by name, along with years of holdings and an indication whether interlibrary loan is available. Finally, formats are identified as paper, microform, or (digital) open access.
