Alt-Press Watch (fee-based) Full text database of over 130 independent and alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals. Many of the articles are in-depth on topics such as arts, the media, and popular culture, hunger, abuse, the environment, global news and more. 1995-
Alternative Press Index (fee-based) A bibliographic database of journal, newspaper, and magazine articles from over 300 international alternative, radical, and left periodicals. Born of the New Left, the API was launched in 1969 to provide access to the emerging theories and practices of radical social change.
America's Historical Newspapers Page images of more than 1300 newspapers from all 50 states. Previously known as Early American Newspapers, and based on the microfilm collection of the same name. Some titles include many decades of coverage, others only a few issues. Part of the Readex Archive of Americana digital collection. Little overlap with the comparable 19th Century US Newspapers Digital Archive.
Directory of US Newspapers in American Libraries From the Library of Congress; a searchable index of newspapers published in the United States since 1690. This directory can help identify what titles exist for a specific place and time, and how to access them. LOC does not necessarily hold titles included in Directory.
Ethnic NewsWatch (fee-based) A current resource of full-text newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic and minority press, providing researchers access to essential, often overlooked perspectives. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the resources is the inclusion of unique community publications not found in any other database, as well as top scholarly journals on ethnicities and ethnic studies.
Factiva (fee-based) Dow Jones news and business article database that covers thousands of news outlets worldwide in multiple languages. Academic subscriptions are unable to license the full content, but still include articles from websites, daily newspapers, and business publications.
Global Newsstream (fee-based) Current, full-text news sources including newspapers, newswires, news journals, television and radio transcripts, blogs, podcasts, and digital-only websites. Institutional subscriptions may include U. S. Newsstream, which has U.S. daily, regional, and Hispanic components; Canadian Newsstream; and International Newsstream, which also has regional components.
Independent Voices Open access digital collection of alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century.

Newspapers.com Library Edition (fee-based) Online access to 5,600+ full and partial runs of regional, state, and local titles from the United States and other countries, dating from the early 1700s into the early 2000s.
Nexis Uni (fee-based) Formerly LexisNexis Academic. Provides full-text access to more than 17,000 sources, including company profiles, financial reports, broadcast news and government transcripts, trade journals, wire services and newspapers. Updated with full-text documents from general interest wire services, newspapers, and magazines from around the world. RELX Group (formerly Reed Elsevier).
OneFile: News (fee-based) Gale OneFile: News provides access to more than 2,300 major U.S. regional, national, and local newspapers, as well as leading titles from around the world. It also includes thousands of images, radio and TV broadcasts and transcripts.
PressReader (fee-based) PressReader provides interactive, digital access to nearly 7,000 of the world’s best newspapers and magazines. Just like reading a print edition, viewers can browse articles and other key elements, including pictures, advertisements, classifieds, and notices.
US Major Dailies (fee-based) Coverage of 5 major U.S. newspapers: Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.
Vanderbilt Television News Archive (fee-based) This archival collection includes more than 30,000 television evening news broadcasts from ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN, as well as over 9,000 hours of "special news-related programming" (such as presidential press conferences). The archive has been developed since 1968. Subscribing institutions can search abstracts of the news programs and view limited streaming content. DVDs of the news programs can be ordered from Vanderbilt for a fee.

Committee to Protect Journalists An independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to promote press freedom worldwide by defending the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal.
Factcheck.org A nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” for voters that monitors the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews and news releases.
Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) Critiques media coverage, promotes journalistic diversity, and presents under-reported stories, from a progressive/liberal perspective.

Media Bias/Fact Check Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) was founded in 2015 by Dave M. Van Zandt. MBFC uses an explicit methodology to rate media outlets. It considers four main categories and multiple subcategories in assessing the "Political bias" and "Factual Reporting" of each source. It is widely used and has sometimes been criticised for its methodology

American Press Institute (API) Educational non-advocacy 501(c)3 nonprofit organization affiliated with the News Media Alliance. It aims to help the news media, especially local publishers and newspaper media, advance in the digital age.
Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) is a communication institution whose sphere of operation covers the Philippines and the ASEAN region. It provides graduate education in journalism and communication management; conducts professional enhancement training for journalists, communicators, and development managers; and undertakes communication policy research and project management activities.

Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy The Shorenstein Center at Harvard University is dedicated to exploring the intersection of press, politics and public policy in theory and practice. The Center has emerged as a major source for research on U.S. campaigns and elections, journalism and public policy, international news, and race, gender and the press. It is a widely respected convener of journalists, scholars and political activists working to help the press improve its role in democracy.
Tow Center for Digital Journalism Established in 2010 as an institute within Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, the Tow Center explores how the development of technology is changing journalism, its practice and its consumption. By commissioning research in these emerging areas, and developing teaching methods and courses, the Tow Center seeks to convene debate around the issues facing digital journalism.

Professional Associations

ACES: The Society for Editing A professional organization of copy editors dedicated to improving the quality of journalism and the working lives of journalists. Main purpose is to educate members and others in the news business in ways of improving the standards of copy editing and increasing the value the news industry places on the craft.
American Press Institute (API) This is the oldest and largest institute dedicated to training and the professional development of professionals in the news industry and journalism educators.
American Society of Magazine Editors The American Society of Magazine Editors is the principal organization for the editorial leaders of magazines and websites published in the United States. Founded in 1963, ASME strives to defend the First Amendment, support the development of journalism and promote the editorial integrity of print and digital publications. ASME sponsors the National Magazine Awards in association with the Columbia Journalism School, conducts training programs for reporters and editors and publishes the ASME Guidelines for Editors and Publishers.
Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) AAJA was formed in 1981 and it's mission is three-fold: to encourage Asian American and Pacific Islanders to enter the ranks of journalism, to work for fair and accurate coverage of Asian American and Pacific Islanders, to increase the number of Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists and news managers in the industry.
Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) Exists to improve professional standards of newspaper sports departments, to discuss and attempt to resolve problems of newspaper sports departments, to improve communication between sports departments and other newspaper departments and newspaper management and to recognize professional excellence among the membership.
Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) The AEJMC promotes standards for education in journalism and mass communication, encourages communication research, encourages the implementation of a multi-cultural society in the classroom and curriculum, and defends and maintains freedom of expression in day-to-day living. Publishes Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, Journalism and Communication Monographs.
Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN) The trade organization for the alternative newspaper business. A diverse group of 122 non-daily free-circulation papers that are distributed in all of the major metropolitan areas of North America. Each paper has a distinct, local identity that sets it apart from the mainstream press in its market.
Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ) An independent, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing public understanding of health care issues. Its mission is to improve the quality, accuracy and visibility of health care reporting, writing and editing.
Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) Exists to promote excellence in journalism. The national voice of Canadian journalists and focus is to uphold the public's right to know. Encourages and promotes investigative journalism.
Education Writers Association (EWA) The national professional organization for education reporters, EWA was organized in 1947 by a group of newspaper reporters with the intent of improving education reporting to the public.
Fund for Investigative Journalism The Fund for Investigative Journalism was founded in 1969 by the late Philip M. Stern, a public-spirited philanthropist who devoted his life "to balancing the scales of justice." Over three decades, the Fund has awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to freelance reporters, authors and small publications, enabling the publication of more than 700 stories and broadcasts and some 50 books.

Indigenous Journalists Association NAJA, presently known as IJA, now based on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Its primary goal is to lift up Indigenous voices in all platforms of media, and work with our colleagues across the media industry to ensure accurate and contextual reporting about Indigenous people and communities.
International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) Founded in 1984 as an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of journalism worldwide, especially in countries with little or no tradition of an independent press.
International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) "a global network of more than 200 investigative journalists in 70 countries who collaborate on in-depth investigative stories."
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Promotes international action to defend press freedom and social justice through strong, free and independent trade unions of journalists.
International News Media Association (INMA) Dedicated to strengthening the marketing of newspaper companies' products, and approaching all activities with a global perspective.
International Press Institute (IPI) A global organisation dedicated to the promotion and protection of press freedom and the improvement of the practices of journalism.
Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) A grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting, IRE was formed in 1975 to create a forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each other by sharing story ideas, newsgathering techniques and news sources.
Journalism Education Association (JEA) Kansas State University, 103 Kedzie Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506. (785) 532-5532 The only independent national scholastic journalism organization for teachers and advisers. JEA supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities, by promoting professionalism, by encouraging and rewarding student excellence and teacher achievement, and by fostering an atmosphere which encompasses diversity yet builds unity.
National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ)
National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) An association dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry.
National Association of Science Writers (NASW) Chartered to foster the dissemination of accurate information regarding science through all media normally devoted to informing the public.
National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) National Federation of Press Women is a dynamic nationwide organization of professional women — and men — pursuing careers across the communications spectrum.
National Newspaper Association (NNA) A not-for-profit trade association representing the owners, publishers and editors of America's community newspapers. NNA's mission is to protect, promote and enhance America's community newspapers, and it’s 3,200 members make it the largest newspaper association in the United States.
National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) Also known as the Black Press of America, the NNPA is a 62-year-old federation of more than 200 Black community newspapers from across the United States.
National Press Club Many areas restricted to members and a lot of the site is dedicated to information for and about the club, but includes library and research links, news sources, etc.
National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) Organized to develop, educate and promote newspaper columnists; and to provide the general public with better professional newspaper columnists through education and example.

News/Media Alliance A nonprofit organization representing the $55 billion newspaper industry, the Association focuses on six key strategic priorities that collectively affect the newspaper industry: marketing, public policy, diversity, industry development, newspaper operations and readership.
Nieman Foundation for Journalism To promote and elevate the standards of journalism and educate persons deemed especially qualified for journalism.
NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists Founded in 1990, NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists is an organization of journalists, media professionals, educators and students working from within the news industry to foster fair and accurate coverage of LGBTQ issues.
Online News Association (ONA) Mission is to "Inspire innovation and excellence among digital journalists to better serve the public."
Organization of News Ombudsmen and Standards Editors (ONO) The Organization of News Ombudsmen and Standards Editors (ONO) is a modern, international non-profit organization. ONO membership comprises news ombudsmen, readers’ representatives and standards editors from around the world, working online, in print, in television and radio. Since its inception in 1980, ONO has built an active cohort of European, Scandinavian, British, South American, Indian, Australian and Canadian editorial standards and editorial complaints handling executives. It is also working to strengthen relationships with the Asian news media who share its editorial principles of independence, fairness, balance and accuracy.
Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) "Founded as a grassroots organization in 1946, RTDNA works to protect the rights of electronic journalists in the courts and legislatures throughout the country, promotes ethical standards in the industry, provides members with training and education and honors outstanding work in the profession through the Edward R. Murrow Awards."
Religion News Association (RNA) The professional organization for journalists covering religion news for the secular media
Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press A nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free legal assistance to journalists since 1970 in defense of free speech and press freedoms.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) This Paris-based, nongovernmental organization has been a world leader in promoting and defending freedom of information since 1985. It produces the World Press Freedom Index, ranking 180 countries by freedom afforded to journalists.
Society for News Design (SND) An international professional organization comprised of editors, designers, graphic artists, publishers, illustrators, art directors, photographers, advertising artists, Website designers, students and faculty.
Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) The only U.S.- based membership organization of working journalists dedicated to improvements in environmental reporting. Primary goal is to advance public understanding of critically important environmental issues through more and better environmental journalism.
Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.
Washington Press Club Foundation (WPCF) A non-profit corporation that exists to make available historic materials on American journalism, to pursue the ideals of equality and excellence in journalism, and to educate the public on the role of a free press.
World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) The World Association of News Publishers, or WAN-IFRA, is the global organisation of the world’s press. It derives its authority from its global network of 3,000 news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs, and its legitimacy from its 60 member publisher associations representing 18,000 publications in 120 countries.
World Press Institute (WPI) Mission is to foster understanding about the role and responsibilities of a free press in a democracy.
